Explore Katahdin: A Two-Day Winter Adventure

Are you ready for an unforgettable winter journey in one of Maine’s most iconic landscapes? Join Equinox Guiding Service for a two-day mountaineering trip on the breathtaking slopes of Mount Katahdin, where you’ll gain essential skills, conquer new challenges, and experience the beauty of Baxter State Park in its most pristine season.

Your Adventure Awaits

Our Katahdin trip, scheduled for March 1–2, 2025, is designed for adventurers looking to develop their mountaineering skills while tackling one of the Northeast’s most awe-inspiring peaks. Over two days, you’ll hike, camp, and summit in a supportive, small-group setting guided by experienced professionals.

Here’s how this incredible journey will unfold:

Day 1: Meet, Hike, and Camp at Abol Bridge

We’ll kick off our adventure at the iconic Abol Bridge, where you’ll meet your guide and fellow participants. After a quick gear check and briefing, we’ll hike into the Abol Campground, our basecamp for the night.

Upon arrival, we’ll cover basic mountaineering skills, including:

• How to efficiently pack and manage your gear.

• Navigating icy terrain using crampons and ice axes.

• Setting up camp in winter conditions.

You’ll enjoy a hearty group meal prepared by your guide, providing the energy you’ll need for the next day’s summit push. As night falls, relax by the warmth of camaraderie and prepare for an early start.

Day 2: Summit Push and Descend

Rising with the sun, we’ll embark on our summit push up the Abol Trail, a classic winter route known for its stunning views and rewarding challenges. Along the way, you’ll practice self-rescue techniques, learning how to manage potential hazards such as falls or equipment failure in a controlled, professional setting.

As we ascend, you’ll feel the thrill of winter mountaineering, stepping into a world of snow and ice with unparalleled vistas of the surrounding wilderness. Standing atop Katahdin, you’ll experience a sense of accomplishment few adventures can match.

After celebrating our success, we’ll descend carefully back to Abol Campground and hike out to the trailhead, wrapping up two days of incredible adventure.
