Grafton Notch ice climbing

Grafton Notch in Maine is known for many things. But Ice climbing is not always the first thing you think of. It’s a hidden gem that folks don’t know about. Many of the locations can be found on Moutain Project. We offer full days of ice climbing here you can find out more on our website.

The rock here is mostly made up of a composite with lots of mica mixed into the meshwork of the formation. I spend a lot of my winter roaming these cliffs. From Steep ice to mellow learn to climb cliffs its really got it all. The fun of the place is finding the ice. It’s scattered throughout the Vally on many a remote cliff band that has more character than most climbing in new England. It also carries that charm of old ice routs where you have to know someone who knows someone who recommends a place.

Grafton definitely has the charm and charisma of old Maine climbs.

Beaver slabs are one of my favorite spots in Grafton. It holds some of the sunniest cliffs with no traffic. It provides an experience that is Mellow and warm. It’s an amazing place to lay the grounds for an experience online any other. It Showcases how to climb in and of its self. All I have to do is show up and allow people to try it out.

Grafton notch for bigginners is perfectly set up for folks that want to learn how to climb. By starting off on easy terrain we set ourselves up for a more advanced afternoon of climbing.

The amphitheater in Grafton has some of the most consistent ice in Maine. It holds ice deep into May and frequently holds some of the biggest formations in Grafton. I frequently end at this place since it holds some of my clients' steeper formations. It has some of the more esthetically pleasing steep ice that can consistently blow a client’s mind away. I Love taking clients here because it has other climbers, and being able to observe other climbers climbing is one of the key learning opportunities. It demonstrates technique, whether that is good or bad it does not really matter the fact that they are observing someone else climbing can bring a novice into an expert roll very quickly.

The Stream can lead up to the top of Old spec if you want. But i’ve found that bottom to be perfect for an adventure in the alpine. With a couple pitches of easy terrain brings a fun adventure to clients looking for an afternoon frolic.
